“Words make all the difference.” ~Laura Schmidt

When you hear that someone has a bachelor of science in pre-med and then worked for years as systems engineer, the descriptor of budding entrepreneur doesn’t immediately come to mind but that describes Laura Schmidt to a tee. Her first entrepreneurial venture was direct sales and she built an organization from scratch producing over $1,000,000 in year to year sales. The idea of putting positive thinking into action came to mind while on a trip with her family and the result was Notes to Self Socks®.

Notes to Self socks are available online and in over 1900 stores across the country, including Hallmark stores, hospital gift shops, and select boutiques. Laura will tell you the path to success wasn’t a straight line but the lessons learned and lives touched make it all worth it. Not only will this interview give you insights to help to your business, you’ll most likely be inspired too!

You can listen to the interview here. (direct download link)

I had the opportunity to visit Socks Central to do the interview with Laura. It’s easy to see when meeting her team that a focus on being positive isn’t just something they weave into their socks, but instead it’s embedded into their culture. Socks Central was buzzing with activity and the atmosphere made you want to stay a while. Be sure to check out the Notes To Self website and while there, scroll over to the ‘Your Stories’ page to read and watch stories sock senders and wearers have shared.

Supporting the growth of other businesses is important and Laura made the decision to have her socks made exclusively in the U.S.A. She also believes in giving back and donates socks to non-profit organizations.

When asked how listeners can add value to Laura, she mentioned wanting to connect with Instagram influencers. If you know someone, please make the connection by sending an email to Laura@notestoself.com! Speaking of social, you can connect with Notes to Self on Instagram @notestoselfsocks, Twitter @notestoselfsock and Facebook. You can also find Laura on LinkedIn.

Laura’s favorite reads: Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek and Crushing It by Gary V. She shares a great story about Gary V. and crushing it. And a piece of advice – “get out of the office”.

You can find the rest of the In Layman’s Terms episodes on iTunes. If we haven’t connected already, find me on Instagram and Twitter @joycelayman, Facebook and LinkedIn too. Feel free to drop me a line through my website at joycelayman.com
