The Proverbial Wrench

It’s not what happens but how you react that counts!

“Everything happens for a reason and exactly when it’s supposed to” is something my oldest brother has reminded me of on many occasions.  He first told me this when our mother’s health was failing and in looking back the series of events in the months before her passing, things  couldn’t have been more perfectly orchestrated.  It certainly didn’t feel like it in the midst of everything that was going on.

Why is it that we have a tendency to get upset when something doesn’t go as planned or the proverbial wrench is thrown into our life?  I’ve been guilty of it in the past. For me it was as simple as having a meeting reschedule at the last minute that created what I viewed as chaos in my world.  Arghhhhh!  Now instead of getting upset I know that there’s always a reason.  It isn’t always easy to see so taking a few deep breaths and remembering my brother’s words of wisdom is sometimes necessary.  I may not figure out the ‘why did this happen’ immediately but I know looking back after all is said and done that it will make sense.

Something else to consider is that our perfect planning doesn’t always mean a perfect result.  What I mean by that is sometimes we don’t let ourselves dream big enough so our result could have been even greater than we imagined.  Decide what it is that you want, create a plan and be open to a new direction or opportunity when something doesn’t go just right.  In the words of Tom Stoppard “Every exit is an entrance somewhere else.”  Perspective is key to maintaining sanity in today’s world.  When it comes to other people, know that you can’t control how they will react, only how you react.

The next time your world unexpectedly shifts remember:

  • You have a choice in how you respond
  • Notice your attitude toward what’s happening
  • Be open
  • Pause and take a breath
  • Perspective, perspective, perspective
  • Everything happens for a reason and exactly when it’s supposed to

Until next time…………
